What are the symptoms?

Since cats tend to hide their symptoms, if you notice any abnormalities in the behaviour of your cat your cat should see your veterinarian.

Symptoms
The first signs of Feline Panleukopenia your cat will have are depression and lethargy, fever which may fluctuate, and not eating.  In a few days, your cat may start to vomit and have diarrhea which may be bloody.  This causes your cat to become dehydrated.  He may sit in front of his water bowl for a long period of time without drinking much.  Feline Panleukopenia may also cause a reduced number of blood cells, especially white blood cells which are an important part of your cat's immune system.  In fatal cases, cats will be hypothermic and severely dehydrated.  Symptoms are generally seen within a week of infection.  The disease will last less than a week but can be very severe and often fatal, especially in young, senior, and sick cats.

Infection in pregnant cats

Feline Panleukopenia infection in pregnant cats poses a significant risk to the kittens she is carrying.  It can cause abortions or still births.  If the kittens are born alive they are often infected .  Feline Panleukopenia in very young cats can interfere with normal brain and eye development.  These kittens will be uncoordinated, tremor, have difficulty walking, and may have grey spots in their eyes.  Kittens may also die suddenly with little or no symptoms.  The best way to protect kittens from infection is to ensure the mother cat has been vaccinated for Feline Panleukopenia.
